In the early 2000s, the restructuring of state-owned enterprises brings a wave of layoffs. A young boy sees the factory residential compound as his boundless playground. On the day before he leaves, his paradise falls apart.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

A Stroll in the Park is my undergraduate thesis film. It began as a return to my childhood. The parks, schools, playgrounds and close-knit neighbours of a state-owned factory compound once seemed to form a world without limits. Only as I grew older did I begin to encounter its boundaries and reconsider the everyday life that was disappearing.

On the day we finished filming, my grandfather, the inspiration for a central character, passed away. That loss changed my relationship with the film. Through a long editing process, I chose to interweave personal footage with fictional scenes, allowing a lived farewell to enter the film. The relationship between these forms became a way of reconsidering memory and what it means for an image to be true.
